Do not schedule a date to drop off your pet until you have had a chance to view the inside of the boarding facility. You do not want to make the mistake of assuming that this is something that you can do when you get there for the drop off, as you might be rushed and out of time at that point. It might be too late to find an immediate opening at another boarding facility. Therefore, you will need to call ahead of time and ask if you can stop by to view the facility. Then if you can, you will want to stop by at a time when no one is expecting you. This will allow you to get the most realistic vision of how they run their facility. You can then make your decision from there.

You could always talk with friends and family that have had to board their pets in the past. Be sure to ask not only what they liked about the facility they used, but what they disliked about it as well. If the cannot think of anything that they disliked, or if what they do mention is trivial, you should consider that to be a good option for you.
